Export Service Centre launches Indonesia’s first environment friendly cargo depesting service, ESC-EcO2, in Denpasar, Bali

ISPM 15-certified facility to ensure continued exports from Indonesia after global ban on Methyl bromide use for export containers

INDONESIA, May 21, 2010 – The Export Service Centre, which is a member of the non-profit Kearny Alliance, launched Indonesia’s first environment-friendly cargo depesting facility, ESC-EcO2, in Denpasar, Bali.

ESC-EcO2 is a partnership between the Export Service Centre Indonesia and the leading eco-friendly treatment provider, the Netherland’s EcO2 B.V. It offers methyl bromide-free ISPM 15-certified treatment solutions for wood packaging, export containers and cargo.

“This ‘green’ facility is critical to the future of Indonesia’s exports,” said Eugene Verspoor, general manager of the Export Service Centre. “From March 18th, the EU has banned the import of containers treated with methyl bromide.

“As a stop-gap measure, some fumigators treat cargo outside the container – but it is extremely poisonous, harmful to people and contributes to global warming. Also, degassing is often incomplete, subjecting containers to costly quarantine in Europe. These realities mean our services are very cost-effective for buyers.

“We’ve invested in this proven facility with the world’s leader to ensure Indonesian producers can continue to export – and therefore continue to create much-needed jobs in this critical sector.

“We look forward to working closely with Bali’s fumigators and freight forwarders to offer this service to their customers – today and well into the future.”

Montreal Protocol stipulates global ban on methyl bromide
The Montreal Protocol on ozone-depleting substances lists methyl bromide among those chemicals to be banned globally, according to Pesticides News. In issue 79, it notes that “[i]ndustrialized countries were given until 1 January 2005 to stop using MB [methyl bromide], while less developed countries were given until 2015.”

Due to a number of deaths in European cargo handling facilities due to lethal levels of methyl bromide in containers, the European Union has banned the use of the chemical in the EU as of March 18, 2010.

The benefit of this ban will reduce health risks to humans and the environment. For shippers and importers who continue to use methyl bromide, it could result in significant added quarantine costs and delays to container importation.

Global environmental concerns – bottom line realities for importers
Environmental concerns are top-of-mind in most importing countries. Worries over toxic gas, ozone layer depletion and global warming mean tighter scrutiny of containers and treatment methods.

This means importers may face significant costs if containers are quarantined. Some of these costs include:

  • Degassing fees of €600, daily demurrage of €45 (plus handling charges)
  • Delayed delivery which may incur penalties and handling charges
  • Customers' complaints over toxic methyl bromide residue

The ESC-EcO2 service offers a clean, green alternative to poisonous methyl bromide fumigation and ensures containers are not quarantined for degassing.

Freight forwarder PT. Dua Sahabat quality control manager, Carlos vanden Broek, said: “We are delighted to work with ESC-EcO2 to offer this eco-friendly service to our long-term customers. Clearly this treatment process is the way the industry is heading – so we are excited to be involved from its inception here in Indonesia.”

Expanding services to grow exports and create jobs in developing Asia
Alexander Boome, program director of The Kearny Alliance said: “The aim of the Export Service Centre is to assist buyers worldwide source from quality suppliers in Indonesia – and create jobs for the producers.

“With the addition of eco-friendly cargo depesting, The Export Service Centre now offers the most complete, in-house buying solution in Indonesia. This includes sourcing, sampling, quality control, packing, depesting, shipping and replenishment.

“We believe this comprehensive offering will make us buyers’ choice for Indonesia sourcing – and help advance the job-creation opportunities of this social enterprise.”

Strong Buyer Interest in Indonesian Natural Products Exhibited at China Sourcing Fairs: Fashion Accessories and Gifts & Home Products

Non-Profit Export Service Centre Showcases One-of-a-Kind Handcrafted Home Décor, Sandals with Recycled Tires for Soles, and New Eco-Friendly ‘Ship & Show’ Bamboo Packaging System at Global Sources Fairs at AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong

HONG KONG, April 28, 2008 – Indonesia’s non-profit Export Service Centre (http://www.ExportServiceCentre.com) reports strong buyer interest for its new lines of eco-friendly fashion accessories and home décor at its large booths at the China Sourcing Fairs: Fashion Accessories and Gifts & Home Products (http://www.chinasourcingfairs.com) in Hong Kong April 12-15 and 20-23, respectively.

Stunning exhibits of handcrafted leather and natural fiber handbags, sandals with recycled motorcycle tires for soles, museum-quality handcarved home décor and a tropical gazebo were highlights at the company’s booths at the Global Sources fairs at AsiaWorld-Expo.

“This was our best series of shows to date,” said Eugene Verspoor, general manager of the Export Service Centre. “By doubling the size of our booth and expanding our product scope from October, we’ve given the beautiful products from Indonesia the exposure they deserve.

“The Fairs have really helped us advance the Export Service Centre’s mission of ‘Aid through Trade’. Our aim is to create lasting jobs for local artisans through export development. So every order buyers’ place helps create employment for people in need.”

Environment-Friendly ‘Ship & Show’ Bamboo Packaging Draws Buyer Attention

“Buyers love our natural products and new eco-friendly bamboo packing,” Verspoor said. “Our ‘Ship & Show’ packaging saves the environment by using bamboo – which grows up to five times faster than trees. Plus, the eco-friendly packaging saves buyers money.”

Carved statues and vases are shipped and can be displayed in-store in the packaging. This means retailers don’t have to pay to dispose of shipping crates – and customers can take items home without the store having to re-pack for home delivery. After customers remove the item, they can even use the crate for shelving in the garage or garden.

The Export Service Centre also offers specialized sourcing solutions for buyers – from supplier identifications and sampling to QC and shipping. “The team in Bali works hand-in-hand with buyers to ensure they get international-quality products, follow-through and service. We call this ‘Trading with peace of mind’.”
