Vietnam Sourcing Report: Footwear shows
exporters anticipate export growth despite ongoing
anti-dumping concerns in 2010
Makers diversify export markets to offset impact of
EU’s anti-dumping measures; R&D focused on
locally-sourced materials to improve fit and performance
HO
CHI MINH CITY, Mar. 8, 2010 - The non-profit
Kearny Alliance
has released the
Vietnam Sourcing Report: Footwear, to assist volume
buyers to source from qualified suppliers in Vietnam.
The report is published with the support of
Global Sources
(NASDAQ: GSOL).
The footwear sourcing report features profiles of 32
experienced larger, midsized and emerging export
manufacturers. Included are 108 best-selling export
products ranging from casual shoes and sandals to sports
and formal shoes.
Of concern to makers is the EU’s anti-dumping duties of
10 percent on Vietnam footwear. However, suppliers
surveyed noted that the 16 percent anti-dumping duty
imposed on China gives Vietnam makers an advantage, and
therefore anticipate export growth of at least 10
percent in 2010.
“The Vietnam footwear sector enjoys a number of
competitive advantages,” said Alexander Boome, program
director of The Kearny Alliance. “Among which are an
abundant supply of raw materials, favorable government
support and the large pool of skilled suppliers with
proven OEM capability.
“This is clearly supported by the number of
well-established international brands entrusting their
production to Vietnam suppliers. As a consequence, the
country is the fifth-largest exporter of footwear in the
world.”
Report survey results show EU key target export
market despite challenges
The survey of Vietnam footwear manufacturers featured in
the report shows:
- 60 percent of makers will maintain the
quotes for the next year;
- 90 percent expect the sales to increase by
10 percent or more;
- 47 percent will target the EU market; and,
- 35 percent will focus on better fit and
performance.
Monthly capacity of featured suppliers is 10.14 million
pieces. Total export sales in 2009 were $147.8 million.
Director of Investment and Trade Promotion Centre, Tu
Minh Thien, said: “We take pride in our cooperation with
the Kearny Alliance to help give Vietnam’s quality
suppliers access global buyers. The targeted and unique
series of sourcing reports and the B2B Global Sources
Online website truly give our suppliers a competitive
advantage.
“It’s delightful to know that these services are
supported by Global Sources as part of its corporate
social responsibility. The ultimate of goal of this
initiative is to facilitate global trade and create jobs
– a perfect fit with our organization.”
One of the suppliers featured in the report, Director of
T&T Fashion Shoes, Tran Duc Trieu said: “We are
confident that Vietnam footwear makers can meet the high
demands of quality and budget-conscious buyers
worldwide.
“Producers not only have talented and hard-working
staff, but also good management and supplies of raw
materials. The main challenge confronting us is that
global buyers find it difficult to find us, and we also
find it hard to locate them!
“We expected the integrated, marketing opportunities
presented by this report and B2B website will be the
effective connector that enlightens us as to buyer
demands, delivers us their precious contact details, and
ultimately good orders.”
More sourcing opportunities for buyers; more
jobs created for developing economies
“Our Sourcing Reports are important components of the
Kearny Alliance’s Developing Country Export Assistance
Program,” Boome said. “Each supplier featured in the
Report also has a website on Global Sources Online.
“This marketing to the Global Sources community of more
than 888,000 buyers helps suppliers sell to volume
importers worldwide – and gives buyers more sourcing
opportunities.
“Our ultimate goal of increased exports is to enable
suppliers to create sustainable jobs, so workers can
support their families and improve their living
standards. This is the focus of our mission of Aid
through Trade.”

First-ever Cambodia Sourcing Report: Silk
Fashion Accessories offers global buyers new
suppliers of quality scarves, handbags and more
Global Sources and non-profit Kearny Alliance help
create jobs for landmine and polio victims, orphans and
the disabled through exports
PHNOM
PENH, Jan. 28, 2009 – The non-profit
Kearny Alliance has released the first-ever
Cambodia Sourcing Report: Silk Fashion Accessories
with the support of its partner in development,
Global Sources, to offer volume buyers quality
suppliers from Cambodia.
The report features detailed profiles of 21 experienced
export suppliers that employ skilled staff, most of whom
are landmine or polio victims, orphans or disabled.
Cambodia Silk Fashion Accessories also includes
descriptions, prices and packaging details for more than
100 popular export products. These include scarves,
shawls, shoulder and evening bags, clutches, coin
purses, earrings, necklaces, and wallets, as well as
men’s shirts, and women’s apparel
“Cambodian handmade silks are stunning – but not widely
known in overseas markets. We aim to change that through
this report – and the suppliers’ websites on Global
Sources Online,” said Alexander Boome, program director
of The Kearny Alliance.
The Artisans Association of Cambodia’s (AAC) director,
Men Sinoeun, said: “Most of the suppliers featured in
the report are AAC members, and all offer export-quality
products, designed with overseas buyers in mind.
“All are made with traditional techniques by
organizations that focus on skills development and job
creation for needy – and hardworking – people. Most have
overcome challenges of physical disabilities and poverty
to provide for their families by making lovely
products.”
The Kearny Alliance’s Cambodia project manager, Sokunthy
Heng, said: “We’ve carefully selected small-scale makers
who produce to international standards in a socially
responsible manner.
“Sourcing from suppliers in the report is a win-win-win
proposition: Buyers profit from offering customers
quality hand-crafted products; consumers benefit by
enjoying unique accessories, knowing their purchase has
made a difference in peoples’ lives – and the workers
can take pride in being able to provide for themselves
and support their families.”
Aiding in the economic recovery through exports
In 2008, total export revenue of the 21 featured
suppliers was $1 million, down by about 25 percent from
2007. All surveyed makers noted they expect exports to
rebound in 2010.
One supplier in the report, Kieng Sabay, general manager
of Rajana Association, said: “The new exposure provided
through the report and our Global Sources website have
come at the right time to help us attract new customers
as the global economy improves.
“We anticipate 10 percent export growth this year as we
have received several buyer inquiries through Global
Sources Online. We expect many will turn into customers
soon.”

More sourcing opportunities for global buyers,
more jobs created
“The Sourcing Report is an important component of the
Kearny Alliances’ Developing Country Export Assistance
Program,” Boome said. “The aim of the program is to
assist small- to mid-sized export manufacturers in
Cambodia, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, and the Philippines
to tap new export markets. As a result, local suppliers
can hire more workers and create sustainable jobs.
“Global Sources – as part of its corporate social
responsibility – also provided each featured supplier
with B2B websites on Global Sources Online. This
connects them with Global Sources 854,000 active buyers
worldwide.”
