Vietnam craft gifts suppliers anticipate double-digit export growth in 2010; 71 percent plan to hold export prices over the next 6 months

Vietnam Sourcing Report: Craft GiftsHANOI, July 23, 2010 – Vietnam’s craft gift suppliers are gearing up for robust sales growth for second half of 2010, after weathering a challenging export climate last year. This is according to Vietnam Sourcing Report: Craft Gifts, released by the Kearny Alliance with the support of its partner in development, Global Sources (NASDAQ: GSOL).

To attract buyers, more than 70 percent of makers have maintained prices through lower margins. They are also focusing on combining a variety of locally available materials to differentiate their products from competitors.

The Report covers profiles of 34 manufacturers, plus descriptions, prices and packaging details for 105 best-selling export products. These include crafts, gifts and novelties which are made of wood, bamboo, ceramic, glass, metal, fabric, plastic and more.

“As major export markets show signs of recovery, Vietnam craft gifts suppliers are confident of seeing stronger demand,” said Khiem Vu, program manager of the Developing Country Export Assistance Program. “In fact, 90 percent of the suppliers interviewed for this report expect export sales to increase by at least 10 percent over the next 12 months.”

One supplier profiled in the report, Nguyen Huy Thong, sales manager of Ngoc Dong Ha Nam, said: “We are focusing on pressed bamboo by using semiautomatic machines to reduce labor cost and combine bamboo with woven rattan to offer competitive quotes with unique designs.

“We expect to attract more orders from new markets through this export marketing assistance program provided by the Kearny Alliance and its partner Global Sources.”

Survey results show export price trend; highlight product and target market
“The report survey shows export prices range from less than 30 cents to above $20, depending on type of material and design,” Vu said. “Fifty six percent of the featured suppliers are releasing new models in the coming months.”

Other results of suppliers featured in the Vietnam Sourcing Report: Craft Gifts include:

  • Crafts account for up to 75 percent of total output;
  • Wood, and ceramic and glass are used as main materials, accounting for 21 and 16 percent, respectively;
  • 60 percent of supplier will target the EU market; and,
  • Suppliers who plan to raise quotes will keep increases to within five percent.

Total capacity of featured suppliers is 820,000 pieces per month, of which exports account for more than 50 percent.

Unique styles feature man-made and natural materials
“Bags from Vietnam are unique, and many styles are competitive with other supply markets worldwide,” said Khiem Vu, manager of the Developing Country Export Assistance Program. “Makers tend to employ different, locally-sourced materials to offer a variety of designs in an array of hand-made styles and embellishments.

“For instance, most suppliers use silk, cotton, bamboo, rattan, or sea grass for fashion bags and further decorate them through traditional embroidery, beadwork, horn or mother-of-pearl.”

One maker featured in the report, Vo My Huong, general director of Hoang Viet, said: “With nearly 15 years of experience of making laptop, luggage and children bags for US and Asia markets, we are confident that our products can attract new buyers through our design, order flexibility and innovation.

Survey results show makers target EU; highlight product and price trends
“As our report survey shows, nearly all interviewed suppliers expect their export sales to increase by at least 10 percent over the next 12 months to key overseas markets such as the EU and the US,” Vu said.

“Based on their current buyers’ OEM specifications, majority of the suppliers are focusing on producing items that depict more colorful patterns and eco-friendly materials.”

The survey of Vietnam manufacturers of bags featured in the report shows:

  • 56 percent of makers will increase export quotes for the next year;
  • 80 percent of them will cautiously raise quotes no more than 5 percent
  • Most will target the EU market; and,
  • Export prices range from less than 30 cents to above $20, depending on type of bag and design complexity

Special-purpose and fashion bags are top exports among suppliers, accounting for more than 90 percent of total shipments altogether. Total capacity of featured suppliers is 6.95 million pieces a month, of which exports account for more than 60 percent.

When asked about the most critical challenge facing the sector, nearly half of the suppliers noted labor cost.

  • 64 percent of makers will increase export quotes for the next year;
  • Most will raise quotes between 5 and 10 percent
  • 50 percent will target the EU market; and,
  • 37 percent will focus on more colorful patterns and intricate designs.

Total capacity of the featured suppliers is 1.58 million pieces a month, half of which is targeted for overseas markets. When asked about the most critical challenge facing the sector, nearly 60 percent of the suppliers noted severe price competition.

Vietnam Sourcing Report: Footwear shows exporters anticipate export growth despite ongoing anti-dumping concerns in 2010

Makers diversify export markets to offset impact of EU’s anti-dumping measures; R&D focused on locally-sourced materials to improve fit and performance

The footwear sourcing report features profiles of 32 experienced larger, midsized and emerging export manufacturers. Included are 108 best-selling export products ranging from casual shoes and sandals to sports and formal shoes.

Of concern to makers is the EU’s anti-dumping duties of 10 percent on Vietnam footwear. However, suppliers surveyed noted that the 16 percent anti-dumping duty imposed on China gives Vietnam makers an advantage, and therefore anticipate export growth of at least 10 percent in 2010.

Report survey results show EU key target export market despite challenges
The survey of Vietnam footwear manufacturers featured in the report shows:

  • 60 percent of makers will maintain the quotes for the next year;
  • 90 percent expect the sales to increase by 10 percent or more;
  • 47 percent will target the EU market; and,
  • 35 percent will focus on better fit and performance.
Monthly capacity of featured suppliers is 10.14 million pieces. Total export sales in 2009 were $147.8 million.

Cambodia Sourcing Report: Silk Fashion AccessoriesPHNOM PENH, Jan. 28, 2009 – The non-profit Kearny Alliance has released the first-ever Cambodia Sourcing Report: Silk Fashion Accessories with the support of its partner in development, Global Sources, to offer volume buyers quality suppliers from Cambodia.

The report features detailed profiles of 21 experienced export suppliers that employ skilled staff, most of whom are landmine or polio victims, orphans or disabled.

Cambodia Silk Fashion Accessories also includes descriptions, prices and packaging details for more than 100 popular export products. These include scarves, shawls, shoulder and evening bags, clutches, coin purses, earrings, necklaces, and wallets, as well as men’s shirts, and women’s apparel

“Cambodian handmade silks are stunning – but not widely known in overseas markets. We aim to change that through this report – and the suppliers’ websites on Global Sources Online,” said Alexander Boome, program director of The Kearny Alliance.

The Artisans Association of Cambodia’s (AAC) director, Men Sinoeun, said: “Most of the suppliers featured in the report are AAC members, and all offer export-quality products, designed with overseas buyers in mind.

“All are made with traditional techniques by organizations that focus on skills development and job creation for needy – and hardworking – people. Most have overcome challenges of physical disabilities and poverty to provide for their families by making lovely products.”

The Kearny Alliance’s Cambodia project manager, Sokunthy Heng, said: “We’ve carefully selected small-scale makers who produce to international standards in a socially responsible manner.

“Sourcing from suppliers in the report is a win-win-win proposition: Buyers profit from offering customers quality hand-crafted products; consumers benefit by enjoying unique accessories, knowing their purchase has made a difference in peoples’ lives – and the workers can take pride in being able to provide for themselves and support their families.”

Aiding in the economic recovery through exports
In 2008, total export revenue of the 21 featured suppliers was $1 million, down by about 25 percent from 2007. All surveyed makers noted they expect exports to rebound in 2010.

One supplier in the report, Kieng Sabay, general manager of Rajana Association, said: “The new exposure provided through the report and our Global Sources website have come at the right time to help us attract new customers as the global economy improves.

“We anticipate 10 percent export growth this year as we have received several buyer inquiries through Global Sources Online. We expect many will turn into customers soon.”

As a result, local suppliers can hire more workers and create sustainable jobs.
