Komodo Dragon National Park
The Komodo dragon is a species of lizard that inhabits the islands of Komodo,
Rinca, Flores, and Gili Motang in Indonesia. A member of the monitor lizard
family, it is the largest living species of lizard, growing to an average length
of 2 to 3 meters and weighing around 70 kilograms.
The tourism concessions at Loh Liang and Loh Buaya stations at Komodo National Park are managed by PT. Putri Naga Komodo (PNK), a destination management company
that is working to establish the human resources and sustainable financing
necessary to protect and preserve Komodo National Park.
The concessionaire supports the Komodo National Park Authority with the
collection of revenues from visiting tourists and by making resources and
facilities available for Park and tourism management.
PNK is a joint venture, majority owned by the global conservation NGO The Nature
Conservancy (TNC), which has been involved in supporting the Park for more than
a decade. Although incorporated as business enterprise in 2005, PNK is
structured to turn back any and all profits to support the management of the
Park.
Initiatives supported with PNK financing include basic park management
activities such as community outreach, communications, monitoring, surveillance
and enforcement, but the company also supports sustainable community development
through micro-financing and micro-enterprise development as well as investing in
destination marketing that promotes both key conservation messages and local
tourism products and service providers.
The business model for PNK is based on a growing number of tourists paying an
increasing conservation fee for visiting the Park. So, while PNK is supported by
a seven-year grant, starting 2005, provided through the World Bank’s private
sector financing arm, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), with matching
funds from TNC, PNK hopes to become independent of current grant funding by 2012
and establish a self-financing structure that will ensue the effective
management of the Park in the long term.
